ISO 14001:2026 Environmental Management System Standard Published
The 2026 revision of the ISO 14001 standard prepared by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has been published. This new version aims to enhance the effectiveness of the Environmental Management System, strengthen the sustainability approach, and make organizations’ environmental performance more transparent and measurable.
Key Changes
Climate change, biodiversity, pollution levels, and resource use have now been placed at the center.
The life-cycle approach has been strengthened.
The pathway from stakeholder expectations to compliance obligations has been clarified.
Greater emphasis has been placed on the risk and opportunity approach.
Planning and management of changes have been incorporated.
A more comprehensive evaluation of the supply chain and external providers is intended.
Increased focus has been placed on sustainability and environmental performance indicators.
Governance and top management responsibility have been further strengthened.
Transition Process
The transition period is 3 years.
During the transition period determined by ISO, ISO 14001:2015 certificates will remain valid.
Before the end of the transition period—i.e., before April 2029—all certificates must be transitioned to ISO 14001:2026.
Transition audits may be conducted together with scheduled surveillance audits or recertification audits. Transition can also be achieved via an interim transition audit.
